  • “Tie-Dye” Cupcakes

Recently I made a Rainbow layer cake for my son’s birthday.   I had a box of cake mix leftover and thought I would try making a cupcake version of this cake.

I made the White Cake Mix and then divided it into 4 bowls, I dyed each bowl and then scooped spoonfuls into muffins cups.

I baked for 15 minutes at 350.  They kids loved them.  Looking back, I wish I would have swirled the colors around a little bit with a toothpick.

I did not frost them, too messy and less sugar.  If you make these, share your link in the comments please, I would love to see them!

  • Looking Back on Christmas 2012

I almost can’t believe how quickly it is all over with, this Christmas rush, gathering with family and friends… all of it.  So much anticipation then it comes and goes like a flash.  We enjoyed this Christmas so much and created lots of memories.

Homemade Christmas cards, the fun was in taking them, especially with a funny lil guy making us all crack up.

All in all, it has been fantastic.  We also had the privilege of attending an wonderfully touching Christmas Eve Service, so blessed!

For New Years Eve I treated my dear husband to a pan seared steak (thanks to Sean and Debbie for the great Emeril cast iron pan), creamed spinach, baked potatoes and salad.  We ate by candlelight while the kids had their own New Year’s Eve party in their room, taquitos, doritos, candy and all.  We gathered at 10 to pop the Martinellis and countdown.  One of the best NYE’s ever!

  • First Time Family Pictures

We finally did it! Thanks to Facebook, I recently saw some gorgeous photos of families I know. I just had to get ours done too. We have never had professional pictures done, now I couldn’t resist. I wanted some nice pics of the whole family. So we did it!

I contacted the photographer who took the pictures of the other families, her name is Lisa with LiLo Photography.   She set us up to meet at a local Museum that has a working farm, great place to snap pics.

Can I just tell you that I LOVE the pictures?  I was so nervous because honestly I didn’t know if my boys would cooperate.  My 2 little ones did not cooperate after about 15 minutes, lol.  I was unsure if they gave her any good shots.

Well folks that is what Professionals are for!  Of course she captured perfect pics of them.  So thankful!!

If you are in the Denver area, I highly recommend her.  She has an amazing portfolio that you can view online at Facebook (please “Like” her, you will love the pics she posts) or on her website.

She made us feel comfortable right away.  She introduced herself to the boys and made them feel special, thank you for that Lisa!

  • Adventures in My Father’s World Week 2 -Jesus Suncatcher

We are loving Adventures in My Fathers World.  The Bible portion starts with Jesus, His birth, on to when he starts preaching.  We are also learning the different names of Jesus.  During week 2 we got to make a Jesus suncatcher.  The was fun and easy.  This final result is pretty!

    crayon shavings

You need Wax Paper, crayon shavings, glue, scissors, construction paper, an iron and newsprint.

Jesus suncatcherCut out 2” letters from construction paper

Jesus suncatcherArrange the letters on wax paper and sprinkle on the crayon shavings, be conservative.

Jesus suncatcherPlace another sheet of wax paper on top, cover with newsprint and iron on low.  Be sure to have paper under the wax as well.

    Jesus suncatcher

We added construction paper border to match our letters.

We will definitely use this technique to create other projects in the future.  I am thinking maybe a Mayflower silhouette with blue and white crayons shavings, with yellow for a sun.

  • Our Classroom for a Perfect Autumn Day

A couple of Fridays ago we took class outdoors, what a breath of fresh air!  It was amazing, fantastic, refreshing and down right FUN!

    Perfect Autumn Day

We love going to Hudson Gardens, several acres of God’s beautiful creation!  We searched for leaves, watched ducks and geese, chased butterflies and bugs, tumbled in the grass and climbed a rock cave, we even did some bird watching.

  • Tackling Kid Clutter

Ugh!  I never, ever knew how much “stuff” kids can accumulate. Let’s see, between birthdays, Christmas and trips to the toy aisle we definitely do not lack in toys for our children.  Another seemingly win-less battle?  Getting the kids to pick up after they are done playing.

Sure, I dream of having a plastic, labeled storage bin for each toy set and then only pulling one down at a time.  When they are done with one toy I would love it if they put it all back in their bins and then we can pull out another. Because of lack of funds and space, that is just a dream for now.

    elfa Kids Storage

Because we do lack space, I have to be creative and diligent.  I have picked up plastic baskets at the Dollar store which are great for storing small toy sets.  Bigger sets like out duplo get stored in a large plastic bin and then it is put on the top shelf of the closet. We take it down after the clean up their other toys.

We also have a really cool bunk bed with HUGE under bed storage drawers.  They hold an amazing amount of stuff.  One is packed with costumes, the other filled with Thomas the Train sets.   These are a blessing, I do not know where I would keep all this stuff!

We have 1 three drawer unit that holds:  People/Animals, Cars, and Blocks.  The last toy holder in the boys room is an open bin organizer, this holds building blocks, horses and a stable, robot making pieces and learning games.  I made these items open and accessible for my littlest guy.  My older boys love Hotwheels and Legos, each have their own toolbox to store them in.

Crafts and art supplies can also become overwhelming as your children grow.  I had mine stashed, here and there and everywhere!  I did not like trying to gather everything from all over the house.  My solution:  I turned our coat closet into a craft closet.   I sorted the items, and labeled all the drawers.

    Coat Closet Storage

To sum it all up, my 10 best strategies for de-cluttering and organizing toys in a child’s playroom:

    1.  Make use of closet space, you do not have to have everything out all the time.

    2.  Cycle your kids toys, take some and stash them for a few months.  When you bring them out the kids are thrilled and love them all over again.  When you pull some out, put some more away.

    3.  Sort and label, teach your children to do the same.  Kids like to play in a clean, organized space.

    4.  Make clean up time a game.  Set a 10-minute timer, who clean up the quickest?  Ready, set, go!

    5.  Head to IKEA.com or The Container Store for inspiration on storage.  The possibilities are endless.

    6.  Save shoeboxs and other plastic containers that other products come in.  Use them, label them.  I recycle a ton of this type of packaging.  I use them for toys and crafts.

    7.  Each evening, the family should spend time together.  We all go into the room and help clean up any remaining toys from the day, then we all read books.  A nice tradition.

    8.  Don’t be afraid to let go of some of your children’s things.  Most the time, they wont even miss it.  I remember a couple of years ago when I put the train set away as punishment.  I thought they would be devastated.  They didn’t even notice!

    9.  Sell toys and baby gear at a Consignment sale or donate them to local preschools and churches

    10. Utilize under bed storage, it is priceless!

Now for some FALL Cleaning and Organizing.  Go!

  • Back to School Pictures

    I am a 2nd Grader

School Pictures!  Looking around the web I found some great ideas!  My middle child is not in this round, he was not in the mood so I didn’t push it. I will get him though! He will be next, may take some bribery.

Preston 2nd Gradegot this idea from Pinterest.  I showed him the picture and asked if there was anything else he would want people to know about him and he added “MarioVideo Game Master Player” – *too funny*

  • Turning 8

    I am 8 Preston

My oldest turned 8 this past week and  we did things a little different this year.  Usually we do the whole party thing, but I thought it was time for some more meaningful time with people he loves.  I asked him if he wanted to have each Grandma take him on a date and then we would let him choose a friend to take to our local amusement center.

He loved the idea and so I let our families know the scoop, they were game!

The night before his birthday my Mom picked him up and they headed straight for the “toy aisle”.  Preston picked out his favorite toy – building bricks.  He picked out a Star Wars set and a Transformer set.  Then they headed to his favorite restaurant of all time, Country Buffet.  My boy loves steak, potatoes and salad, he is in heaven there.  Next they headed to the shoe store for some new tennies and for one more special treat, they went to her house and built one of his new sets together.  He had a fantastic time!

The following morning was his birthday so I made him smiley face pancakes complete with M & M eyes.

After breakfast we headed to his favorite playground for some serious fun.

  • Stopping to Smell the Roses, Literally!

The Rose Garden at Hudson Gardens

I love flowers, I love gardening.  Before I had kids, most of my time was spent gardening.  I researched, planned, plotted and planted.  Fast forward 8 years and I have no time to garden, I figure I will be able to do it again once my kids are a little older.

Until then, I get my flower fix at my local public garden, called Hudson Gardens.  30 acres of God’s beauty in nature.  It’s almost heaven!

I wandered through the Rose Garden and snapped some shots of my favorites.

  • 2011 “Not” Back to School Blog Hop!

Not Back to School Blog Hop

Last year while I was gearing up for my first year of Homeschool, I came across a Blog Hop. At the time I had no clue what a Blog Hop was… glad I found out. A blog hop is a place where bloggers with common interests can participate in a theme and submit their blog to one place. I poured through so many blogs, I was so inspired.

Home of the Matter Online is sponsoring another one for August.

This week’s topic is Curriculum. I am going to share 2 lists with you. My “dream” list and my “real” list! I have 2 simply because of budgetary reasons.

    My Dream List:

Writing: Institute for Excellence in Writing

Science: Apologia Zoology 1 (Flying Creatures of the 5th Day)

    Character Training:  Positive Action Bible

    Math:  Math U See

    History:  History of Mystery

Here is what we will be using for my Kindergartner:

    Sonlight Core 1

    Sonlight Core 1

We used this for Preston this past year.  Oliver is already doing math and reading so I am going to try Core 1 with him this year .  He will probably end up doing the Apologia Science with us.

For My 2nd Grader and possibly my Kinder – Adventures in my Fathers World.  I have this curriculum and it is for multiple kids.  I am going to work through and may discover that I do not need the Sonlight Core.  I will keep you posted!

Preston will also be using Horizons, we used it last year and liked it.

For all 3 boys I am going to use Positive Action for Character Training.

Thanks for stopping by!  I cannot wait to see all the blogger Mommies and what they are using!

Next Week:  SCHOOLROOMS!!!  (did I tell you an IKEA just opened up in my city?!?!)

    This looks perfect:

     Love IKEA Inspiration!
