    Christmas ornaments

November brings along that crisp breeze of fresh air accompanied by a bright, blue sky.  People start putting up Christmas decorations, the stores stock up on goodies and send out their catalogs.  The coffee shops offer the yummiest drinks of the year.  There’s gathering with friends for coffee and conversation during the holiday rush.  Christmas is the most joyous occasion, there are so many wonderful things about it!  I am getting very excited.

The holiday season is fast approaching. I already RSVP’d to a cookie exchange, Children’s Christmas Pageant and a women’s Chirstmas tea.  Sounds fun, right?

I think I will start decorating this weekend.   I love savoring the season because it brings so much joy, good food and time well spent with family and friends.  Most of all, I cherish the reason for the season, celebrating the birth of the King of Kings, Jesus!

One major thing that I will start today is my annual Christmas card and gift order from Shutterfly.  Now that our family pictures are done I can place the order!  Let me just say, I love Shutterfly!  I buy all my photobooks from them and pick up prints every couple of months.  The quality of their products is top notch.

At Christmas time I use them for my Christmas cards, here is the card we used last year, we received tons of compliments:

    Shutterfly Christmas Card

Shutterfly Christmas Card Totally cute, right?

When I place my card order I make sure and hit the Photo Gift section and pick up gifts.  I usually pick up 2 calendars for the Grandma’s, something for Dad to have at the office and a photobook or two for my sister with all the pictures I have of my nephew.  I can never resist getting a little something special for myself, this year I think it will be an ornament with our family picture.

Want to win 25 FREE cards from Shutterfly?  I am giving 3 readers this fantastic gift courtesy of Shutterfly.  Leave a comment below, tell me your FAVORITE Christmas food or drink.  Deadline is Sunday, November 13th, 10PM MST.

  • My Top 10 Time Saving Tips for Busy Moms

    Save Time

Before I had children I must admit I had NO clue how much parenting changes your entire life.  Nothing is the same.   Gone are the days of leaving the house in a flash, it takes us a good 10 minutes to get everyone and everything ready.  Shoes, socks, arguments about socks, books, crayons, legos, diapers, wipes, water bottles, and on and on.  You get me.  I do remember I used to just grab my purse, maybe  some cash in my back pocket, and head out.  I would be in the car and out of the driveway in under a minute.

One thing I have had to learn now that we have 3 boys running around is efficiency.  We all need more time, and when we get it, we need more.  I am always reading books on organization and efficiency.  It hasn’t happened over night but gradually we are getting more and more efficient as a family.

Some tips I have come up with to help you save time and sanity!

    1. Always, always, prepare clothes (even socks and shoes) the night before.  Lay them out, in the morning send each child to their outfit and have them dress themselves.  Check on them after a few mintues to see if any of them need help.  I used to pick the clothes out and dress the kids, now I can get myself ready and pack a bag while they get dressed.

    2. Teach your children to rinse their dishes and put them in dishwasher.  This was a challenge for me because I have a particular way of loading the dishwasher.  However, now I have the kids rinse and put their dish in, I rearrange and run.  It literally takes 45 seconds to rearrange them and my kids are taking ownership – no dishes sitting around, piling up.

    3. Use a timer – You would not believe how much you can get done in little time.  Waiting for water to boil?  Sweep the floor, empty the dishwasher, go through your Junk drawer.  You can squeeze a lot of tidy-ing up in little time.  Set a timer for 15 minutes and start in one area that needs attention.

    4. Having kids means having errands to run, almost always.  Plan your trips.  Plan to take care of many items on your list not just one.  You will save time and gas.

    5. Packing for an outing or a trip?  Put a laundry basket out and start putting items you know you will need in it.  As you come across another item, throw it in.  This way you will fill it as you are working on other things and you will not forget anything.

    lists

    6. LISTS – I can’t say it enough, lists are huge.  They keep you on track.  Lists are good for errands, events, grocery shopping and more.  Make a list for the store and you will not have to go back for items you may have forgotten.  Also having a list keeps you on track and will prevent you from impulse buys.  You will be in and out of the store quicker than ever!

    7. Use Amazon Subscribe and Save for items you use most.  We have toilet paper, peanut butter, tissue, diapers, coffee and other staples delivered to our house through Amazon.  You can sign up to have the items delivered as often as you like + you get an addition 10-15% off when you subscribe.  Free shipping too!   No more running out to the store, it comes to you!

    8. Ordering out?  Call ahead of time!  Make sure you call your order in ahead of time, that way you are in and out.  HUGE time saver.

    9. Learn to delegate, let some things go.  If you are like me, than you know how hard it can be to let the kids do stuff when you want it done a particular way.  But let it go.  Let them do it their way, they are learning from it, the can take pride in their work, this is so important.  Let them take on more tasks.  Give yourself a break and have more time for other things.

    10. Of course it has to do with Starbucks, you all know how addicted I am to Starbucks.  I needed a Starbucks time saver considering how much time I spend there, hee hee.

DID you know that now you can pay with your smartphone at the register.  I saw a lady do it last week and it was cool, she scanned it herself and it only took like 3 seconds!

So there you have it!  Head out and save yourself some time and money and sanity.  :O)

  • Time to Start Thinking About Summer Vacation

It is March, yep March, just like that.   It always amazes me how fast time goes by, I don’t care how cliche it sounds.  So, here we are – March!

I love when it starts getting lighter each morning, the birds chirping, bulbs starting to pop through the cold ground.  Before we know it we will be half way into Summer!

Now is a perfect time to start planning your family vacation(s).  Some families like to save up for 1 big trip.  Others, like us, like to take several short getaways.  Lately, though, I must admit that the thought of 7-10 days away gets me thinking and gets me excited!

I would love to do the Disney vacay, or a trip to Mt. Rushmore, maybe head up to a ranch in Montana or Idaho, or how about NYC with a road trip up to Boston.

I have started to do research on affordable, fun, family vacations.  I would like to share my results with you.  These are my top 10 tips for getting away with great family travel deals and saving money:

    1.  The dream vacation almost everyone wants to take – Disneyland, how to go on a budget?  The sooner you book, the better deal you will get.  Also, travel before school let’s out and we are talking big savings.   Right now SouthWest Airlines has packages priced at up to 30% OFF if you book by March 19th.

    2.  Take a drive to Mt. Rushmore.  Rent a car, Alamo gives you 10% OFF if you pre-pay for your rental, also now through the end of the year – a FREE upgrade!  Mt. Rushmore has plenty of accommodations around but have you thought about camping?!  Fun, adventurous, inexpensive.

    3.  Rocky Mountain National Park provides the most breath-taking scenery in America!  Drive on the highest paved road in America, see more wildlife than you can imagine.  If you stay in Grand Lake, Granby, or Estates Park you are sure to find nicely priced cabins, condos, campgrounds and hotels.  Hiking, picnics, sightseeing, wildlife watching – can’t beat it!  You can also pick up the Rocky Card to get additional discounts on meals to local restaurants.

    4.  Book a stay at a Water Park Hotel.  These are popping up all over the country.  Stay and play right there at the resort.  Rent a car to see local sites, fun and inexpensive.  What a perfect opportunity to visit a city you would have never considered before.  If you book in advance most let kids stay free!  Also, check their website and sign up for emails, most will send you coupons.

    5.  Head on down to Texas partner.  Texas is FUN!  BIG FUN!  So much to do, so many different big cities to see.  Take in city life or head to the country for a little dude ranching, maybe even the beach!  You will not find a friendlier set of people.

If you have a destination but want to save money while you are there:

    1.  Try to book accomodations that provide a kitchen.  Whether you stay in a condo/townhome, cabin or a Suites-type hotel this is sure to save you a ton of money.  We buy groceries and make our breakfasts and dinners.  Plus snacks are great to have on hand to resist trips to the convenience store or vending area.

    2.  Do your research before hand.  Get on the web and hunt for local coupons, there is so much out if you just look.

    3.  Plan days, this will allow you to budget.  Then you will see everything you wanted to see and stay on track with your money.  Resist the temptation to pull out your cash at every corner.

    4.  Try a home swapping site.  Most have a comments and rating system so you are not stuck with any surprises.  This can be fun, adventurous and cheap!  www.HomeExchange.com OR at couchsurfing.org you can find a place to stay almost anywhere in the world.  Look carefully though because not all can accommodate more than 3 people.

    5.  Ultimately, if you do not have a lot of money.  Stay in your parts and look from a different perspective.  Go and see things you never thought you would.  Go to your local Visitors Bureau, bet you will be surprised.

Whatever you do, do it with joy!   Take time to enjoy your family, don’t get caught up in expectations.  Enjoy the moment!  Happy planning!
