  • Back to School Pictures

    I am a 2nd Grader

School Pictures!  Looking around the web I found some great ideas!  My middle child is not in this round, he was not in the mood so I didn’t push it. I will get him though! He will be next, may take some bribery.

Preston 2nd Gradegot this idea from Pinterest.  I showed him the picture and asked if there was anything else he would want people to know about him and he added “MarioVideo Game Master Player” – *too funny*

  • Turning 8

    I am 8 Preston

My oldest turned 8 this past week and  we did things a little different this year.  Usually we do the whole party thing, but I thought it was time for some more meaningful time with people he loves.  I asked him if he wanted to have each Grandma take him on a date and then we would let him choose a friend to take to our local amusement center.

He loved the idea and so I let our families know the scoop, they were game!

The night before his birthday my Mom picked him up and they headed straight for the “toy aisle”.  Preston picked out his favorite toy – building bricks.  He picked out a Star Wars set and a Transformer set.  Then they headed to his favorite restaurant of all time, Country Buffet.  My boy loves steak, potatoes and salad, he is in heaven there.  Next they headed to the shoe store for some new tennies and for one more special treat, they went to her house and built one of his new sets together.  He had a fantastic time!

The following morning was his birthday so I made him smiley face pancakes complete with M & M eyes.

After breakfast we headed to his favorite playground for some serious fun.

  • Stopping to Smell the Roses, Literally!

The Rose Garden at Hudson Gardens

I love flowers, I love gardening.  Before I had kids, most of my time was spent gardening.  I researched, planned, plotted and planted.  Fast forward 8 years and I have no time to garden, I figure I will be able to do it again once my kids are a little older.

Until then, I get my flower fix at my local public garden, called Hudson Gardens.  30 acres of God’s beauty in nature.  It’s almost heaven!

I wandered through the Rose Garden and snapped some shots of my favorites.

  • 2011 “Not” Back to School Blog Hop!

Not Back to School Blog Hop

Last year while I was gearing up for my first year of Homeschool, I came across a Blog Hop. At the time I had no clue what a Blog Hop was… glad I found out. A blog hop is a place where bloggers with common interests can participate in a theme and submit their blog to one place. I poured through so many blogs, I was so inspired.

Home of the Matter Online is sponsoring another one for August.

This week’s topic is Curriculum. I am going to share 2 lists with you. My “dream” list and my “real” list! I have 2 simply because of budgetary reasons.

    My Dream List:

Writing: Institute for Excellence in Writing

Science: Apologia Zoology 1 (Flying Creatures of the 5th Day)

    Character Training:  Positive Action Bible

    Math:  Math U See

    History:  History of Mystery

Here is what we will be using for my Kindergartner:

    Sonlight Core 1

    Sonlight Core 1

We used this for Preston this past year.  Oliver is already doing math and reading so I am going to try Core 1 with him this year .  He will probably end up doing the Apologia Science with us.

For My 2nd Grader and possibly my Kinder – Adventures in my Fathers World.  I have this curriculum and it is for multiple kids.  I am going to work through and may discover that I do not need the Sonlight Core.  I will keep you posted!

Preston will also be using Horizons, we used it last year and liked it.

For all 3 boys I am going to use Positive Action for Character Training.

Thanks for stopping by!  I cannot wait to see all the blogger Mommies and what they are using!

Next Week:  SCHOOLROOMS!!!  (did I tell you an IKEA just opened up in my city?!?!)

    This looks perfect:

  • Summer Centers

We love centers!  I used them throughout the past school year for all 3 boys.  Some structured some as free-play.  The boys are always happy to pull them out and play with them it is a guaranteed 30 minutes of constructive play.

For the Summer I reorganized them, rearranged and grouped different things together to get the boys geared up for summer indoor activities.

I put everything in one cabinet thanks to my sister who gave me a nice white cabinet.  Thanks Tia!

  • Making Art with Rice

I am always looking for fun ideas the kids.  They love experiments and art.  This Summer, I signed us up for the Activities Challenge at education.com.  They have a sortable list of activities for kids.  Arts & Crafts, Science, Games and Summer Fun are just some of the categories listed.  We have done a few of the activities and the kids have really enjoyed them.

Today we chose the “Make Rice Pictures” activity.  We needed:

    • Rice
    • Food Coloring
    • Rubbing Alcohol
    • Glue
    • Paintbrush
    • Construction Paper

The only step I added:  I thinned my school glue down with a little water and let the kids apply it with a paintbrush.  I only laid out the colors that matched the colored rice (that didn’t last long, lol).  We ended up with a dolphin, a robot on a beach and a “fuzzy” robot.

Here in Colorado the rice only took about 2 hours to dry so we were able to do this activity in one day.  The boys thought it so cool that is was colored rice.  We invited a friend to join us.

This was fun and I recommend.  We have a lot of rice left over so we will do it again.  Might also use the rice inside an “I-SPY ” bottle.  It’s pretty that is for sure!

  • My Top 10 Time Saving Tips for Busy Moms

    Save Time

Before I had children I must admit I had NO clue how much parenting changes your entire life.  Nothing is the same.   Gone are the days of leaving the house in a flash, it takes us a good 10 minutes to get everyone and everything ready.  Shoes, socks, arguments about socks, books, crayons, legos, diapers, wipes, water bottles, and on and on.  You get me.  I do remember I used to just grab my purse, maybe  some cash in my back pocket, and head out.  I would be in the car and out of the driveway in under a minute.

One thing I have had to learn now that we have 3 boys running around is efficiency.  We all need more time, and when we get it, we need more.  I am always reading books on organization and efficiency.  It hasn’t happened over night but gradually we are getting more and more efficient as a family.

Some tips I have come up with to help you save time and sanity!

    1. Always, always, prepare clothes (even socks and shoes) the night before.  Lay them out, in the morning send each child to their outfit and have them dress themselves.  Check on them after a few mintues to see if any of them need help.  I used to pick the clothes out and dress the kids, now I can get myself ready and pack a bag while they get dressed.

    2. Teach your children to rinse their dishes and put them in dishwasher.  This was a challenge for me because I have a particular way of loading the dishwasher.  However, now I have the kids rinse and put their dish in, I rearrange and run.  It literally takes 45 seconds to rearrange them and my kids are taking ownership – no dishes sitting around, piling up.

    3. Use a timer – You would not believe how much you can get done in little time.  Waiting for water to boil?  Sweep the floor, empty the dishwasher, go through your Junk drawer.  You can squeeze a lot of tidy-ing up in little time.  Set a timer for 15 minutes and start in one area that needs attention.

    4. Having kids means having errands to run, almost always.  Plan your trips.  Plan to take care of many items on your list not just one.  You will save time and gas.

    5. Packing for an outing or a trip?  Put a laundry basket out and start putting items you know you will need in it.  As you come across another item, throw it in.  This way you will fill it as you are working on other things and you will not forget anything.

    lists

    6. LISTS – I can’t say it enough, lists are huge.  They keep you on track.  Lists are good for errands, events, grocery shopping and more.  Make a list for the store and you will not have to go back for items you may have forgotten.  Also having a list keeps you on track and will prevent you from impulse buys.  You will be in and out of the store quicker than ever!

    7. Use Amazon Subscribe and Save for items you use most.  We have toilet paper, peanut butter, tissue, diapers, coffee and other staples delivered to our house through Amazon.  You can sign up to have the items delivered as often as you like + you get an addition 10-15% off when you subscribe.  Free shipping too!   No more running out to the store, it comes to you!

    8. Ordering out?  Call ahead of time!  Make sure you call your order in ahead of time, that way you are in and out.  HUGE time saver.

    9. Learn to delegate, let some things go.  If you are like me, than you know how hard it can be to let the kids do stuff when you want it done a particular way.  But let it go.  Let them do it their way, they are learning from it, the can take pride in their work, this is so important.  Let them take on more tasks.  Give yourself a break and have more time for other things.

    10. Of course it has to do with Starbucks, you all know how addicted I am to Starbucks.  I needed a Starbucks time saver considering how much time I spend there, hee hee.

DID you know that now you can pay with your smartphone at the register.  I saw a lady do it last week and it was cool, she scanned it herself and it only took like 3 seconds!

So there you have it!  Head out and save yourself some time and money and sanity.  :O)

  • A Tribute to a Free Spirit

    Bob Bezjak

Have you ever known someone in your life who wasn’t hung up on all the trappings that most of us are?  Have you ever known someone who is genuine, someone who is real, who is easy to be around?

On Saturday, we lost my brother in law in a car accident.  I am at a loss.  He has 3 children, all teens.  Why God?

Bob was a true free spirit, living life not tied to the grind.  Whenever I was around him he was so easy to talk to, so easy to be around.

My husband has known him for over 20 years, he was a brother to him.  He has many wonderful memories of Bobby, especially of hanging out and fishing.

He was also the soccer coach for his children and he was an extremely passionate and caring coach.  An excellent player too!

He had an impact on so many lives!

Bobby — I loved your spirit, your genuineness, your love for your children!  He was an avid fisherman and hunter.  He also delved into gardening.  He also recently won a prize at a car show!

My husband and I went through home movies tonight and I am struck at how I have let it all pass me by.  In the moments that I love seeing on tape – I was focused on the wrong stuff in those moments, only now can I look back and appreciate them.

Hold your family tight.  Cherish the moments, cherish the little things.  Cherish life.

  • A Glimpse of Summer

Wow, we have had some terrible weather!  May has been so rainy.  However, we have had some gorgeous days shine through here and there.

Some pictures to share, my glimpses of  summer, cannot wait for this summer!!  We have so many plans, yet I plan on keeping it simple too, days wide open to anything that might come up or not.  We have a neighborhood pool and a season pass to a local garden.
